FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What kinds of tobacco does the QuitLine help people quit?

The South Dakota QuitLine is not just reserved for traditional smokers. It's for any South Dakota resident 13 years of age and older who is ready to quit smoking, vaping, chewing or using any other kind of tobacco product.

*Note: Medications for those younger than 18 require a prescription from a doctor.

Can I make sure my patients are enrolled and track their progress?

Once a patient expresses they are ready to quit, they can sign a Fax Referral Form, saying that a QuitLine Coach can contact them. From there, you can fax the form to the QuitLine: 1-605-322-3858.

If your patient consents, the QuitLine can forward enrollment and participation information.

How does a patient get in touch with a QuitLine coach for the first time?

Patients can enroll two different ways.

1. By phone: 1-866-737-8487 (1-866-SD-QUITS)

2. Or visit sdquitline.com to request a call

When should patients call the QuitLine? QuitLine coaching sessions are scheduled based on the quitter's convenience to go along with their quitting process. The quitter will get a call at these times, but they can reach out at anytime when they need the extra support.
How many times does a patient have to talk to a coach?

The typical scheduled coaching sessions happen five times with a quit date in mind.

Note: Pregnant women can get as many as four additional calls, including a postpartum follow-up.

What are QuitLine's hours?

Ensure patients that they can feel free to call whenever, as voicemail is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Their calls will be returned on the next business day.

WHY TALK TO PATIENTS ABOUT TOBACCO USE?

  • About 100,000 South Dakotans use tobacco, and about 70,000 of them report that they want to quit for good.
  • While about 70% of all tobacco users have seen a healthcare provider in the last year, fewer than half of those people have been given quit assistance from their provider.
